If the Live Photo includes a JPEG key still, it can be downloaded without re-encoding. HEIC key photos are decoded locally and converted to an ordinary JPG; alternatively, a frame from the paired motion clip can become the output.
JPG does not retain Live Photo playback, transparency, or every wide-color characteristic. The result is intended as a broadly compatible still for forms, messages, and software that expects JPEG.
When the key photo is already JPEG, the most faithful result is the original still bytes rather than a canvas re-encode. A HEIC key photo needs local decoding before JPG export. If timing matters more than resolution, the paired movie can instead provide a chosen frame, and the interface distinguishes that lower-resolution video still from the camera key photo.
