Choose the right tool for the job

JPEG XL tools share a codec but solve different jobs: opening an unfamiliar file, inspecting its container, creating a compatible JPG or PNG, or encoding an existing JPEG or PNG for a controlled JXL workflow. Each page loads the codec only when that format actually needs it and reports the real result rather than assuming that a newer format is always smaller.

Choose JPG when broad photo compatibility matters, PNG when decoded transparency or lossless still pixels matter, and the viewer when no new file is needed. The metadata route stays separate from visual conversion because reading container boxes should not require decoding a large image just to inspect camera or color information.
