PNG is useful when a decoded JPEG XL image needs lossless pixels, an alpha channel, or dependable support in design tools and browsers. The conversion preserves transparent pixels in the first composited JXL frame and does not apply lossy JPG compression.
Because PNG usually prioritizes compatibility over compact size, the result can be much larger than the source JXL. The comparison panel shows that tradeoff before download so a larger file is not mistaken for a failed conversion.
The PNG encoder receives the decoded RGBA pixels directly, which makes this route a better fit than JPG for logos, screenshots, and artwork with transparent edges. Lossless output refers to those decoded pixels, not to preservation of every JXL container box. The browser reports the resulting dimensions and byte size instead of implying that PNG will be smaller.

Limitations
- An animated JPEG XL currently produces a PNG of the first composited frame, not an APNG sequence.
- Wide-color or high-bit-depth JXL pixels are rendered through the supported 8-bit browser output path.
- Large photographic images can expand substantially because PNG does not use photo-oriented lossy compression.

Will a JXL to PNG conversion keep transparent areas?
Yes when the decoder reports an alpha channel for the selected frame. The PNG is encoded with that alpha data instead of flattening it onto a color.
Why can the PNG be much larger than the JXL?
JPEG XL can compress photographic detail far more efficiently. PNG preserves decoded pixels without a photo-quality slider, so compatibility and alpha support may come with a large size increase.
Why was my file rejected even though the extension looks correct?
The contents may be empty, corrupt, too large, or a different format that was renamed. Re-export the original file from its source app and try again.
Does this work on phones?
Yes in current Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox where the required browser or WebAssembly feature is available. Large jobs may complete more reliably on a device with more memory.
