JPEG XL can store a JPEG image more efficiently and, in lossless-recompression mode, keep enough reconstruction information to recover the original JPEG bytes. That makes it useful for personal archives and controlled workflows where JXL support is already available.

Choose lossless JPEG recompression when preservation matters, or a pixel re-encode when you want to trade some fidelity for a smaller file. The output comparison reports real byte sizes; it does not predict savings before the encoder finishes.

A photographic JPEG and a newly encoded JXL are not directly comparable by extension alone. The useful comparison is the completed output size plus the chosen preservation mode. The contents may be empty, corrupt, too large, or a different format that was renamed. Re-export the original file from its source app and try again.
