How to Open JPEG XL Images

Extensions can be wrong after a download, email attachment, or manual rename. A proper viewer checks the JPEG XL signature and then probes dimensions before decoding. If the signature fails, changing the filename will not help; obtain the original export or identify its real format.

When native display works in your browser or image editor, opening the original is the simplest path. Native support can vary by browser version and configuration, so a local WebAssembly viewer is useful when the same file opens on one device but not another.

Choose JPG for an ordinary photograph that must work on a form, marketplace, document, or older site. Pick a quality after looking at the actual output size and preview. If the JXL has transparent pixels, select an explicit background because JPG cannot store alpha.

Choose PNG for a graphic, screenshot, logo, or image whose transparency must remain. PNG is lossless for the decoded frame, but that does not mean the file will be small. It can be several times larger than a compact JXL photo.

A JXL container may include Exif, XMP, camera information, an ICC profile, and other boxes. Conversion does not automatically guarantee that every metadata field was preserved or removed. Inspect the source when location, attribution, or color behavior matters, then review what the chosen output path does.

For private files, prefer a viewer that performs decoding and metadata inspection locally and does not put filenames or metadata values into analytics events.
