The UPC scanner restricts decoding to UPC-A and UPC-E families, validates the check digit, and makes the raw number easy to copy. When an engine normalizes UPC-A as an EAN-13 value beginning with zero, the printed 12-digit UPC is shown clearly.
Camera scanning samples a limited number of frames per second and stops the camera track as soon as the scanner closes. Product lookup is intentionally separate; decoding a UPC does not automatically contact a catalog service.
UPC mode narrows the decoder to UPC-A and UPC-E, validates the check digit, and normalizes the common case where a library returns a 12-digit UPC-A as EAN-13 with a leading zero. The raw number is shown without silently contacting a product database, so scanning does not disclose an inventory or shopping interest to another service.

Limitations
- The scanner does not identify a product without a separate catalog lookup, which is intentionally not automatic.
- A damaged, obscured, or low-resolution check digit can cause the UPC to be rejected rather than guessed.
- Camera availability requires a secure context and user permission, and not every desktop browser exposes a camera.

No automatic catalog request is made. The result is the locally decoded UPC number; product databases vary by region and would create a separate network and privacy decision.
